Marietta Dermatology and Marietta Facial Plastic Surgery, Laser & Aesthetics Center continue to bring the highest level of care to their patients.

By Cobb In Focus Staff

Marietta Dermatology Associates (MDA) was founded by Dr. Clem Doxey and has continuously served the residents of Marietta and the greater Atlanta area since 1970. MDA and its partner, Marietta Facial Plastic Surgery, Laser and Aesthetics Center (founded by Dr. Seth Yellin in 2011), are consistently recognized as leaders in dermatology, Mohs skin cancer surgery, dermatologic research, aesthetics, and facial plastic surgery. Both practices are known in the community for their ability to deliver highly skilled care that combines clinical experience with the most advanced technology to optimize their patients’ experience.

The practice’s main campus is located in a large, freestanding facility in Marietta near WellStar Kennestone Hospital. It has two satellite locations, in Canton and in West Cobb. As one of the largest, private dermatology practices in the Southeast, what sets the practice apart is its in-house dispensary, onsite dermatopathology lab, clinical research department, light therapy department (which treats Psoriasis and Vitiligo patients) and state-of-the art facial cosmetic surgery, laser and aesthetic services — all within one practice.

The Integrated Practice
The partnership of MDA and Marietta Facial Plastic Surgery, Laser & Aesthetics Center combines the expertise of 10 board-certified dermatologists, including two Mohs surgeons, a dermatopathologist, 10 physician assistants and a dual-board certified facial plastic surgeon. Nearly 100,000 patients are served every year in their Marietta, Canton, and West Cobb locations.

Mohs Knows
Marietta Dermatology & The Skin Cancer Center has the distinction of having two fellowship-trained Mohs surgeons. The Mohs surgery technique is considered the most effective treatment for many types of skin cancer. For the most common form of skin cancer, the cure rate after Mohs surgery is up to 99 percent. It also is useful for large tumors, tumors with indistinct borders, tumors near vital functional or cosmetic structures, and tumors for which other forms of therapy have failed.

Both Dr. Jared Friedman and Dr. Adam Perry completed fellowships in Mohs micrographic surgery and are members of the American College of Mohs Surgery (ACMS). An ACMS surgeon is trained as a skin cancer surgeon, pathologist, and reconstructive surgeon. While dermatologists can perform Mohs surgery without completing a fellowship, Drs. Friedman and Perry completed the additional training to provide patients with the highest level of care possible.

Beauty Is Their Business

Dr. Seth Yellin

Dr. Yellin says that since he started practice in 1996, he has seen profound changes that have greatly benefited his patients. Skincare has evolved from “selling women dreams” to scientifically based, and clinically proven technology that keeps skin healthier, with products that can now reverse many of the undesirable effects that come from sun exposure, hormonal changes, and aging. “Now there is science to back up the promises of these products,” he says. “Chemists are making significant progress, for example with skin stem cell activators to build collagen and elastin, topical peptides, growth factors, and vitamin A and C derivatives which can protect from free radical and oxidative stress, and topical estrogen analogues designed to counteract the loss of collagen for post-menopausal women, who lose up to 30 percent of their natural collagen within the first five years after the onset of menopause. These products are safe even for those women who are forbidden from taking estrogen replacement.”

Dr. Yellin notes that non-surgical rejuvenation with injectable fillers and neuromodulators (e.g. Botox®) is transformative and would have been unthinkable 25 years ago. Lastly, the trend towards less invasive cosmetic facial surgery techniques, which can be safely done in the office under local anesthesia, has made aesthetic procedures safer, more affordable, and easier to recover from.

“The noticeable changes that come with the aging process can be emotionally difficult for some,” he continues. “A perceived loss of one’s youthfulness may manifest as a loss of self-confidence.”

Dr. Yellin says he works in the confidence-building business. “Our faces are the most public expression of who we are. Studies have shown that if a person likes their appearance — looking younger, healthier, and better — they’ll make better life choices. Up to seven years can be added to a person’s life, just from looking and feeling better and more confident.”

As a dual-board certified facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Yellin has a well-deserved reputation for creating a natural, beautiful appearance when performing aesthetic surgical procedures such as facelifts, eyelid rejuvenation and rhinoplasty, and is widely known for his Injecta-Lift™ procedure, which reshapes and rejuvenates the face non-surgically. He also reconstructs many of the most complex facial defects created by the removal of skin cancer at MDA’s Skin Cancer Center. In addition, his practice has developed a proprietary line of medical-grade, affordable skincare products called Marietta Derm Essentials.

Growing In The West
MDA’s West Cobb location opened in 1996 housing only two physicians, one of whom was Dr. Mark Knautz. In 2018, the office underwent a marked expansion to 8,000 square feet — four times its original size — and now has room for four board-certified dermatologists, including Drs. Knautz, George F. Dobo, Elizabeth Richwine, and Jessica Harris. Dr. Knautz says the need for expansion was due to the dramatic growth of the practice. “I believe it speaks to our commitment to patient care,” he says.

Drs. Knautz and Harris grew up in the area and are excited to be able to take care of the people of the community in which they were raised. In addition, Dr. Harris continues to follow in the path of her father, Dr. Charles Crabbe, who also grew up in the area and continues to practice medicine here.

To further efforts to serve the West Cobb community, MDA continues to offer general dermatology care with its physician assistants, Shana Hackworth, Stephen Steiner, and Patricia Flynn at its expanded location on Dallas Highway.

Community demand also called for the expansion of Marietta Facial Plastic Surgery Laser & Aesthetics Center, located adjacent to the new West Cobb Dermatology office. “With the addition of our second location, our aesthetics team, which is led by my personally trained physician assistant, Kelly Houmand PA-C, will bring our aesthetic artistry and top-notch skin care expertise to the West Cobb community,” Dr. Yellin says.

The new aesthetics center offers a full array of services, including the latest technologies and the exclusive Injecta-Lift™ procedure, which uses Botox® and facial fillers for facial rejuvenation. The practice also offers BBL™ for brown spots and skin redness, Ultherapy to treat skin laxity, CoolSculpting for non-invasive fat reduction, and micro-needling to rejuvenate skin texture and collagen.

Healthy skin doesn’t just happen. By offering an array of services, from general dermatology and Mohs skin cancer resection to an in-house dispensary, facial plastic surgery and aesthetic services, Marietta Dermatology Associates and Marietta Facial Plastic Surgery, Laser & Aesthetics Center strive to help each patient realize his or her vision of healthy skin.
